Three days in Edinburgh during the Festival — worth it or too hectic?

We can only travel in mid-August and I'm torn. Is the Fringe atmosphere worth the crowds and higher prices, or should we wait for September? Two adults, we like walking and good food, not big on late nights.

Local here. August is genuinely brilliant but plan differently: book restaurants two weeks out, stay in Stockbridge or Leith rather than the Old Town, and use the mornings for sightseeing before the crowds build. Arthur's Seat at 7am in August is empty.

Agree with Ewan. I'd add that accommodation roughly doubles in price, so if budget is tight September is the smarter month — the weather is often better too.

We did exactly this last year and loved it. The free Fringe shows in the afternoon are a lovely low-commitment way in.
